Travel back in time to Hawthorne Street in Portland, OR where 1968 meets 2008. Quirky and offbeat, Hawthorne is a mixture of old Portland and New Age sensibilities. Powell's Books anchors one end - the original neighborhood bookstore/coffee shop with a huge selection of used books. Along the street you'll find a wide array of funky boutiques, vintage clothing shops and the ubiquitous coffee shop. If you're hungry, you have a choice of world cuisines - lebanese baklava, japanese sushi, french pastries and the entire spectrum of vegan cuisine represented on one street. Be prepared, tho - there are quite a few panhandlers and it may not be a great place for a woman alone at night.
