This measures approximately 25m high and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During wet season, the water comes leaping down the mountain-side, but during the dry season, it may not flow at all. It houses a tooth relic of the Lord Buddha, and is consequently considered as one of Sri Lanka's most holy shrines. The central feature of the shrine are four images of the Buddha, which have been carved into a large granite rock. Monica in the town of Pan-ay is an example of a Spanish/Mexican Baroque design. But what makes this church interesting is what it houses. Inside hangs the largest bell in Asia. This massive artifact weights 10.4 tons and was cast in 1878 using 70 sacks of coins contributed by the townsfolk. Once inside, there is a short walk to the Sleeping Golden Buddha and glimmering stalactites about 300m further inside. A blue lagoon is located at the bottom of the cave. The water from the moat was taken from the Huong River (Perfume River) that flows through Huế. This structure is called the citadel. Inside the citadel was the Imperial City, with a perimeter of almost 2.5 kilometers. Inside the Imperial City was the imperial enclosure called the Purple Forbidden City in Vietnamese, a term that mimics that used by the Chinese for their own Forbidden City. The enclosure was reserved for the Nguyen imperial family. A sign below the cross claims that the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple, as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century. ![]() Ayuthaya, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Jun 28, 2008 The Ayutthaya historical park covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya, Thailand, which was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350 and was the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767. In 1969 the Fine Arts Department began with renovations of the ruins, which became more serious after it was declared a historical park in 1976. Doors and windows of the 9 storeys of the stupa are beautifully carved, featuring the life and former reinearnations of the Lord Buddha, 16 classes of visible deities in the Brahma’s world, and Buddhist rites. Murals within the stupa feature history of the town. The top floor, on the 9th storey, houses relics of the Lord Buddha. Over time the temple has expanded, and been made to look more extravagant with many more holy shrines added. The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major towers. One was a four-story keep, while the others held an ammunition storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters. Most of the village clustered in town houses inside the fortress walls. The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch successfully drove the Portuguese out of Melaka. The fortress changed hands again in the early 19th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France.
