It's really touristy, but has a real buzz about it! Just hang out and watch the seals go crazy, or grab a coffee and watch the world go by! ![]() Methven, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Nov 7, 2008 great place to ski, just not much fun to get to - road is quite scary! Skiing in New Zealand is different to anywhere else as you ski above the tree-line, so no trees to show you the way!!! ![]() Egypt ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 I loved this place - to me it was better than the Pyramids of Giza. You're pretty much able to explore the complex around the Step Pyramid of Zoser at your own place, with very little restriction. A fascinating glimpse into the world of the ancient Egyptians. ![]() Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Excellent backpackers with great facilities - close to everything! ![]() Eumundi, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Great markets held every Wednesday and Saturday in the tiny town of Eumundi - near Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. There's not much you can't buy here! ![]() Caloundra, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 A great beach, with a fabulous park, and swimming pool, in case you don't want to swim in the ocean. Kids will love it! ![]() Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Mooloolaba is one of the loveliest, and cleanest beaches anywhere. The Esplanade is lined with cafes, restaurants, boutiques, galleries. A lovely place to spend some time! ![]() Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 A beautiful garden.... I'm not particularly into things botanical, but this place is truly spectacular - particularly in the spring time - I've never seen so any daffodils. The Avon River runs through the park, and it seems that a lot of locals use the park. Very safe, and friendly. ![]() Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 This was really good! I was quite pleasantly surprised! You don't need a whole lot of time. You check in at the bottom Gondola station, and ride to the top. There's a gift shop, cafeteria and viewing deck, plus a ride - worth looking at, but not particularly exciting! Gorgeous panoramic views from the top! ![]() Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 This was a higlight of our trip to Christchurch. Definitely pay the extra to take the 'Hagglund' ride - it's one of the vehicles they use in Antarctica, and you'll go up and down hills, and through water, etc - great fun for young and old!!! Be sure to be there for feeding time with the penguins - its fun, and funny, and interesting! They also simulate an Antarctic snowstorm a couple of times an hour. They provide you with a jacket and booties, but you'll still feel the cold! We spent an entire morning here - my kids loved it, and it was fun for me, too! ![]() Zbigniew M. commented... Added Nov 7, 2008 I find myself strangely attracted to your brain. ![]() Singapore, Singapore ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Oh, if you have the money and want to spoil yourself, book in for High Tea!!!! It's mucho expensivo, but it;s one of those 'once in a lifetime' experiences. Plus, you won't need dinner after you fill up on cucumber sandwiches and gorgeous little cakes and things! ![]() Al Uqsur, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 Plan to spend plenty of time here, and plan your visit ahead of time - you have to purchase tickets to enter the tombs at the entrance to the site, and your ticket allows entry to only certain tombs. If you want to enter Tutankhamen's tomb that requires a seperate ticket. Not all the tombs are the same - some are larger, some are better preserved, etc. They all have different features and attractions. Ask somebody to point out which are the better ones for you to visit. My recommendations are Ramses IV (# 9), Tuthmosis III (#34), and Siptah (#47). I thought Tutankhamun's tomb was worth the extra money, although not everybody agrees. If you're going to visit the Egyptia museum, you should definitely check out the tomb, as you won;t believe what they fit inside it!!! Also, Tutankhamen's body is still inside, in his sarcophagus. ![]() Al Uqsur, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 Amazing - these statues are just sitting by the side of the road. It's sad to think if they are not properly preserved, they may not be standing there much longer.... ![]() Aswan, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 A nice way to spend an hour or two, but with the Egyptian climate, the plants are fairly unremarkable. A big local hangout, so great for people-watching and to mingle with the locals - the kids will stare at you, though! ![]() Abu Sunbul, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 A must-see for any visitor to Egypt. The scale of this place is incredible, particularly considering the isolation. You can fly in to Abu Simbel, or take a bus from Aswan (a long trip, though). A tip is to catch the earliest flight, as you'll get there before the buses and it won't be as crowded. Take time to look at the exhibit which chronicles the relocation of the temples - what a feat of engineering! ![]() Aswan, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 To me this is one of the most beautiful temples in Egypt. It was rescued from the floodwaters when the Nile was dammed, and rebuilt on the Island of Philae. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis. It is beautifully preserved, and the fact that it's right on the water seems to lend it a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. Charter a felucca to get there. ![]() Cairo, Cairo & Surrounding Region, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 One of the most fascinating places I've ever been. There is so much stuff crammed in here, and apparently what's on display is only the tip of the iceberg!!! The Tutankhamen exhibit is fabulous, and if you've visited his tomb, you'll find yourself wondering how they ever managed to fit that much stuff inside it! I loved the Mummy room - well worth the extra fee if you're even remotely interested in Egyptian history. I would recommend getting a guide, and plan to stay for most of the day, to maximise the experience. It's also best to leave this til the end of your Egyptian experience, as it will make more sense. ![]() Freeburgh, Victoria, Australia ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 Hotham is a great place to ski when there's plenty of snow. There's not much beginner terrain - in fact only a couple of runs, so those runs get pretty busy!!! It's different to most on-mountain villages that I know of, as the village is at the top of the mountain, so you ski down and catch the lifts back up to the village. When there's plenty of snow, my pick is the Blue Ribbon area, or the Orchard! ![]() Salisbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 I have to admit I was underwhelmed with Stonehenge!!!! I know it's probably blasphemous to say, but it's true! While I can appreciate the archaeological significance of the site, and it is truly amazing that some of the stones have moss on them that is only found in certain areas hundreds of miles away, it is still a lot smaller and less impressive than I had been led to believe. You also can't get very close to them. ![]() Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 I love Big White! It's got a really cosy village feel, and there's more than enough varied terrain to please anybody. Brett P. commented... Added Oct 13, 2008 Your writing is a work of art. ![]() Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 This place is called Gelatissimo, and they have the BEST icecream anywhere! The flavours are amazing, and they're all made fresh on the premises. They'll also let you 'try before you buy' with tastings of all the flavours. Yum - my mouth's watering just thinking about it! ![]() Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 All the locals eat here. You can get a great meal for under $10! Has an awesome sandwich menu, or you can build your own. Plus they have a great selection of specials that changes every day. Licenced. Brett P. commented... Added Oct 13, 2008 I find myself strangely attracted to your brain. ![]() Whistler, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 A great village with plenty of activities for when you're not skiing, but a little too busy for my liking! ![]() Al Uqsur, Nile Valley, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 This temple was mostly built by Amenhotep, but was added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II and alexander the Great. There is a massive obelisk at the netrance to the temple which is the twin of the one which now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The temple is lit up at night, so visit after dark - its not as hot, and it looks really spectacular! ![]() Beerwah, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 Founded by the late Steve Irwin, and still run by his wife, Terri, this place has to be seen to be believed! The animals are all so healthy-looking, and the grounds are lush and immaculate. All the enclosures are really large, and there aren't lots of fences (I hate zoos where the animals look 'caged') The food available in the Feeding Frenzy food court is fresh and there's tons of variety. It's healthier than most theme park food, and the prices are quite reasonable as well. A big tip is to plan ahead by visiting the website and pre-book your animal 'encounters' - this is where you get to go inside the enclosures with various animals and you can touch them and interact with them. Some of the more exotic ones are the Lemurs (think King Julian in Madagascar) and Rhinos - which aren't on display, so this is the only way to see them. You can also pre-book a Tiger or Cheetah Walk, which is where you get to interact with these majestic big cats - book WAY ahead for the Tigers, though! It seems expensive at first glance - $550 for the Tiger Walk, but when you consider that's for up to 4 people, and you get your admission included as well as a heap of professional photos, I reckon it's a bargain for a 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience! ![]() Hirafu, Hokkaido Region, Japan ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 What a gem of a place this is! The restaurant is located in a purpose-built traditional Mongolian 'Yurt' or tent. There's a platform floor, and loads of space-heaters situated around the tent. You sit on rugs on the floor at low tables. It's an ecclectit looking place, and you feel like you've stumbled into some family's home to share a meal. The service was pleasant and unobtrusive. The food was a fabulous mix of several Asian cuisines, so there was something to please everybody. Food is served banquet-style, and you can just keep ordering more dishes til you've had enough. Very reasonlably priced, and they have a driver who will come ad pick you up from the centre of town at no extra charge. Highly recommended as a must of any visitor to Niseko!
