I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and after college I went on a whirlwind tour of the world. I've now been to 49 different countries and I hope to get to many more in the next few years before I have to settle down. Meanwhile, to stick with the travel feeling I run pub crawls for a local hostel where I get to interact with other travelers all the time. Travel ScorecardCountries See cities Map Loading! For the $25 price you get dinner, you get as much wine as you could possibly drink for the 60-90 minutes that you are eating, which right then gets you your $25 worth and gets you well on your way to drunk. Then you hit up this great bar that i never would have found on my own where you get a free shot and a couple bucks off of each drink. Then you go to yet another bar where the pub crawl just sort of takes over the small space and everyone again gets a free shot. Finally you hit this fantastic little club where you get to walk right past the money taker and dance to the sweet world beats. Phenomenal! ![]() Narvik, Nordland Region, Norway ![]() Added Nov 5, 2008 I went to Narvik simply because it was the northernmost place on the Eurail train line. It is in the arctic circle and if you arrive in the peak of the summer, the sun never sets. There, my buddies and I made fast friends with a girl from one of the shops in the mall and picnic'd with her and a friend of hers. Later, at about 3 in the morning, with the sun still shining, she forced us to strip down to our skivvies and take a dip in the arctic ocean. There was a snow peaked mountain just on the other side of the bay, but we followed orders and waded into the water. It was very very cold. But now I can say i swam in the arctic ocean. Good times. ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 It was my birthday while in Rio so I had my parents pay for my friends and I to go to a nice meal for once. We picked Porcao because of the review we found that described it as "an orgy of meat." This place was stupendous on every level. I think it ended up costing something around $50 a person, but boy was it great. The slices of beef, lamb, pork and chicken were phenomenal and the servers wouldn't stop coming, even when our red cards were on the table. The service was insane. If I picked up a bottle of soda to refill my glass, a waiter would come grab the bottle of my hand before i had a chance to tip it over to pour and do it for me. Awesome experience there. Afterwards I was so full I felt drunk and walked almost a mile past my hostel without realizing it. ![]() Amman, Amman Region, Jordan ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 I was raised on middle eastern cuisine and rely on hummus as a staple condiment in my house. Hashem has some of the best in the world. For just a couple of dollars they will bring you a plate of freshly made hummus, fresh hot pita and a plate of falafel as well. To me, this restuarant is a slice of heaven served in the form of garbanzo goodness. ![]() Wadi Musa, Jordan ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 I'm Jewish and have been to Israel a couple of times now, but had never traveled to Jordan since I, like many others, was a bit frightened by the idea of traveling through an arab country, especially as a Jew. But last time I was in Israel I got rid of those ridiculous preconceptions of Arab countries and I headed to Petra with a friend of mine. WOW! I've seen many of the wonders of the world and Petra is one of the most astounding feats of art and architecture that I have witnessed. I highly recommend people visit Petra and plan on spending a few hours walking around and taking it all in. Really incredible. ![]() Anne G. commented... Added Nov 1, 2008 Just keep writing, just keep writing, I`ll keep reading. :) I couldn't agree more, Petra is fantastic!! ![]() Bocas del Toro, Bocas del Toro Province, Panama ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 When staying on Bocas there arent a whole lot of options. This place is the biggest hostel and its run by three really friendly guys from California who started the place up as a way to escape from reality for a few years. They are actually selling the place now, i saw the ad online and considered purchasing it for a few minutes. Really great laid back atmosphere. there are good people, decent beds, a bar and all the usual hostel goodies. ![]() Argentina ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 This reserve is really amazing. I was there in late March, which is the end of the season, but there were still thousands of penguins around. They just waddle around and sometimes fall down which is hilarious when it happens. You can't touch the birds because it makes them have an undesirable scent, but can just follow them around for hours. So cute and so many of them. Really neat to see. ![]() Cai Tau Thuong, Mekong Delta, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 There may be places with better quality. I think a place called Yali is most often recommended and they have the biggest shop and the most business. I was staying in a hotel next door to Bu's shop, Chic, and was recommended in going there. Bu is a mostly insane little gay man (or lady boy as they would say) and he is super set in his ways of doing things. My friend, who likes his clothes rather loose fitting, kind of hated Bu because he wouldn't cut his pants how he wanted. But overall, for the price, Bu's suits are great. Don't expect the same quality you are going to get buying a suit at a department store for 8 times the price, but that sort of comes with the idea of buying a $60 suit that looks like a $600 suit. Here is the greatest thing I experienced with Bu. He holds on to your measurements and about a year or two after I returned to Los Angeles I found his email address and began a correspondence with him about getting some new suits made and shipped out here. Within about three weeks we negotiated a great price, obviously had to pay for shipping, I sent him photos of what sort of colors and styles i wanted for my suits and I had a box from vietnam on my doorstep with brand new clothes. Awesome. It's not often you get to say to your friends in response to "where did you get your suit?" "oh, I had my vietnamese tailor make it for me." ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 Beautiful? Yes. It looks exactly like the photos. So much so that a photo of yourself infront of it looks like something made on photoshop. I found the cost of getting in to see the Taj was absolutely stupifying however. I was there in 2005 and it cost $20 USD to enter. This is in a country where I was sleeping for $1-2/night and eating meals for 50 cents. I was averaging somewhere around $10/day on my entire budget if you exclude any pointless souvenirs I bought. Is it really worth 2 days entire budget to see a building? No. But how can you be in Northern India and not see the Taj Mahal? That would just be silly. ![]() Kerkyra, Western Greece, Ionian Islands & Peloponnese, Greece ![]() Added Oct 15, 2008 The Pink Palace is quite possibly the most amazing place on earth if you are a backpacker. Forget about 20 person dorms in a worn down brick building in the town's red light district. This is just what it deems itself, a palace. Think Club Med for budget travelers. After being given the complimentary shot of pink ouzo upon arrival, $30 a night will get you a private room in one of the Palace's beachfront buildings, with an ocean view balcony if you are a lucky one. If just that idea alone doesnt swing you, how about I tell you that breakfast is included. Ok, fine, banquet dinner as well. Every evening people are seated at tables of ten where they will meet fellow hostellers, eat a three course greek meal and get their night started right. Then roll to one of the three bars on site to continue until the sun rises. But what do i do during the day?! I guess you can go on one of the organized ATV rides or maybe go on a booze cruise. Although there is always the free alternative of just splashing in the Mediterranean while checking out the other tourists. Go here. It is amazing. Opah! ![]() Palenque, Oaxaca State, Mexico ![]() Added Oct 14, 2008 These are some of the coolest mayan (or zapotec or something) ruins in Mexico. There are a few different locations to see this giant pyramid-esque structures and really what makes them special is the location. These happen to be in the heart of the jungle, with howler monkeys and jaguars in the trees that surround the landmark. You can camp out at one of the local camp grounds that are walking distance from the national park and at night you will be woken by the howling terror of those monkeys. ![]() Budapest, Central Hungary, Hungary ![]() Added Oct 13, 2008 We went here on the Lonely Planet's recomendation. Anytime the phrase "all you can drink" is mentioned, i'm in. I was amazingly surprised by the food though. When the waitress mentioned horse as one of the appetizers, i knew it was going to be a great experience. Up at the mongolian bbq area where you grab raw meat and have the chefs cook it up they have everything from chicken, beef and pork to rabbit, horse and ram. You can have all the wine or beer that you can manage plus a couple of appetizers, dessert and unlimited trips to the buffet. Soooo good. ![]() Mendoza, Cuyo Region, Argentina ![]() Added Oct 13, 2008 Wine tasting in Mendoza, Argentina can result in one of the best travel experiences you can have. The way you have to do it is on a bicycle. There are various shops in the mendoza town center that rent bikes for the day and will tell you how to get to the many wineries nearbye. Go with a friend or two and taste from place to place. Buy bottles. Go on tours. Eat some food. Fall down a few times and eventually arrive back in town for more late night drinking in the center of town. Good times for all. ![]() Quito, Northern Highlands, Ecuador ![]() Added Oct 13, 2008 I have stayed in hostels all over the world and El Centro Del Mundo in Quito, Ecuador is my absolute favorite. Run by a flamboyant French Canadian named Pierre, this place is an amazing amount of fun. Every monday, wednesday and friday is FREE rum and coke night. Pierre picks up a couple bottles of each, dumps them in a pot and you can ladle out as much as you want. When the pot is done, just $1 a person fills it back up. The hostel is clean and the staff is absolutely fantastic. The people who stay here become instant friends. I traveled for a few weeks with some of the people here and met up with many of them later on in different countries. Really one of the greatest hostel families there is.
