I travel because:
I love experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, learning new language, and getting passport stamps!
Perfect meal:
I know this is an odd combo but Greek Salad, Nachos, and Popcorn!
Never travel without:
My u-shape travel neck pillow. I love it so much I even use it when I am at home in my own bed!
I wish they invented:
Shark locator. I know, I'm weird but when I scuba dive, I LOVE to see those magnificent creatures up close.
Last thing I broke:
Mercury thermometer in Nepal...Now I know why they don't make them anymore in the US!
The thing I always forget:
I usually end up bringing too much instead of forgeting something!
Travel inconveniences I could do without:
Flight delays
When not traveling I'm:
at work, saving for/planning my next trip.
Kristina W.
I was born and raised in San Jose, California and exposed to travel at a young age through trips to Austria and Germany to visit my dad's family (I was so little in my first passport photo that my mom had to hold me!). It wasn't until age 19 that I explored on my own when I did a study abroad trip to Australia (and months later a second one to South Africa). From that point forward, I officially became a traveler. Since then, I have visited almost 50 countries/territories and all seven continents. And there is no sign of a slow down anytime soon! I love to inspire others to travel and my goal is to show the world that you can have a full-time job and travel 3-4 times per year! Why should I have to choose between income and adventure?
I love talking travel -- it is truly my passion. I am currently writing a book called Do It While You're Young that is a how-to guide to travel for young women embarking on their first trip abroad (more about the planning and prep versus destination specific). My dream job would be to host my own show on the Travel Channel! I want to show young women the mainstream places like Paris and Rome but also more off-the-beaten path places like Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Some of my most cherished memories have been in places that are barely a speck on the map!
I also love adventure travel! I have gone skydiving, bungee jumped at Victoria Falls, repelled down cliffs, gone scuba diving with sharks, white water rafting in crocodile infested waters (didn't find that out until after!), went on a microflight and once skied off a cliff in the Austrian Alps with a parachute on my back!
I also think it is important to be sustainable when you travel and I am happy to see that GeckoGo and the travel industry as a whole are picking up on that. My travel rules include:
Supporting the local economy in any way I can. I try to seek out family owned hotels, restaurants, and shops. I am also a big fan of supporting local charities. I feel you can make a bigger impact when you work directly with the organization. My employer just launched a program where we get five paid days a year to volunteer and you better believe I will be doing that abroad (Latin America and Africa are the places where I would like to volunteer the most).
Leave only footprints, take home memories instead. When I visit places, I really try to leave minimal traces that I was there. I have been known to bring paper and empty toiletry bottles home for recycling and am obsessed with my reusable water bottles. I am also the funny tourist who brings a reusable tote to markets across the world. The store owner will often try to hand me a plastic bag and I whip out my trusty tote. Their expression is always priceless!
Eating locally and green is something I practice all the time but especially when I travel. I like to seek out places that are making an effort to do this. My absolute favorite experience was in Nepal. The restaurant had free-range chicken but had it listed on the menu as "chicken that is allowed to walk around freely." I loved their conscious effort to be green!
Public transportation is budget-friendly, green, and a great way to experience the culture and meet the locals.
Thanks for your support! If I win, I promise lots of blogs, photos (above and below water!!), and videos (just got the Kodak ZI-8 digital video camera).
Feel free to send me a message if you have questions about me or places I have been. Or Tweet with me: @KristinaWeg and @DIWYY (my blog)
Amazing vegetarian restaurant situated right on the bay overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Both vegan and vegetarian food is available and everything is delicious!
I had the Mezca plate which has a variety of Latin-inspired, vegetarian dishes including a quesadilla with poblano peppers, guacamole and plantain chips and a quinoa-black beans combo. For dessert, I indulged in the lemon pudding which had lavender shortbread on the side.
If you need a dentist, I highly recommend the dental practice of Dr. Peter Kiryakos. His office staff is professional, attentive, and accommodating. The office is very responsive if you need to contact someone in an emergency.
If you want Cuban food, there is only one place to get it in San Jose: Habana Cuba! Tasty authentic dishes with generous portions and friendly service. The menu has endless options, including vegetarian dishes, that will satisfy any palate.
One of my favorite lunchtime spots with delicious Cajun dishes. Set in a small converted house on Autumn Street, blocks from HP Pavilion, Poor House Bistro is a treasure set in this industrial zone on the outskirts of downtown. The service is always wonderful and the food, always delicious. I usually opt for one of their delicious salads or sandwiches accompanied by a warm piece of homemade corn bread.
Live music sometimes and a hot spot before and during Sharks hockey or arena events.
A wonderful bistro in downtown San Jose offering a full bar, restaurant, and beautiful rooftop terrace, available for private events.
The food is always great here. I have had appetizers, soup, salads, and entrees and always been happy with my order. My recent favorite was the Tomato soup. So delicious!
Delicious American cuisine in a fun and lively setting. Great for small or large groups. The theme here is sharing so it isn't uncommon to order a few dishes and eat family style (you can, however, order separately too!). Last time I visited, I had sauteed green beans and an order of macaroni and cheese with grilled chicken atop. Dessert is wonderful too so be sure to save room.
Full bar, several big screen TVs, and walking distance to most downtown San Jose attractions, including HP Pavilion.
I heard about Vegetarian House through a GroupOn deal and was pleased with the food! If you are vegetarian or vegan, there is literally pages and pages of organic options ranging from Asian-inspired to American classics. I enjoyed a vegan Kung Pao dish with brown rice (during their lunch hour, only $7.95 for a generous serving) and loved it. I indulged in the vegan lemon tart for dessert and couldn't believe how good it tasted! The service was just alright but it's worth it for a good, healthy meal.
I had my birthday party here last year and people are still talking about it! Trapeze Arts allows you to join the circus for a day and participate in activities like the flying trapeze and jumping on a trampoline. Reservations are necessary. Grab a group of friends and allot 1-2 hours to learn and perfect your skill.
If you're in the area, be sure to swing by the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield. If it is a weekday, the factory will be in production; if it is a weekend, you can still get a tour but the production floor will be dormant. Expect to spend 30-45 minutes on the free tour which is narrated by video with an employee escorting the group. You do get a package of Jelly Bellys on your way out.
The store is great too...lots of sugary goodness! I love the "belly flops" which they sell in large bags.
If you're in the Reno-Tahoe area, Vex is the place to be in the evenings. Fun, club with entertainment, bottle service, multiple bars, and a large dance floor. Line can get long so try to make reservations.
Fun thing to do on a night on the town in Stockholm. Be sure to make reservations as they do get booked up. Plan to spend about an hour getting ready for and being in the Ice Bar.
I took the ferry over to Tallinn from Helsinki for a day trip and loved the charm and cobblestone streets of the old town. I allotted about 5 hours here so I could see the various points of interest and grab lunch.
An absolutely gorgeous property spread out over several acres. Plan to spend a few hours here exploring the pathways that go through the forest and all the levels of the fountains. Be sure to make your way to the ocean (maybe a 10 minute walk) for another view.
The food options here were disappointing here so try and bring something in or plan your visit to not coincide with a meal time.
A must-do on any visit to St. Petersburg and the home to the famous faberge eggs. Get a guide so you can get a better understanding of all the treasures that this museum holds.
One of my favorite sights in Moscow, the Kremlin tour allowed me to explore the beautiful buildings and see some of the traditions that are still done today. Plan to spend a few hours here exploring.
I visited the Sears Tower as part of my "City Pass" and enjoyed visiting this iconic site. I went on a weekday and the place was practically empty! Be sure to allot some time for ticket processing and security screening.
Visit Chicago from a different perspective: on bike! Choose from one of several tours to see the sights and neighborhoods. Online reservations are recommended and all equipment is provided.
If you're looking for a winery to do a tasting at, I highly recommend Gundlach Bundschu. The staff was very helpful and was very informative in explaining the different varieties of wine. The grounds are gorgeous too!
Beautiful resort in Napa Valley with every amenity you would need for a great vacation. The rooms are comfortable and spacious and the hotel has thought of the little details to make your stay enjoyable (you can check out DVDs, get popcorn, etc).
The on-site spa is amazing as well! Book your treatments in advance and go early to enjoy the spa, sauna, and a snack.
There is also an on-site restaurant as well as a wine tasting room.
Delicious Indian restaurant in San Francisco. Come here with a friend or a group and order several items to share so you can taste all the flavors of North and South India!
One of my favorite Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. Great ambiance, live music on weekends, delicious food, and a full bar. Service is just alright but the amazing food makes up for it!
Cool little bar located in the SOMA neighborhood. The entire place, including the bathrooms, were really clean. Full bar with lots of drink options to meet anyone's tastes. Nice ambiance and a great place to get together with friends.
Luxury tents in pods create this oasis hotel property in Ksar Ghilane. Accommodations are comfortable with most modern amenities (electricity, running water, heater) and the property also has a restaurant, bar/hookah, pool, and hammam.
Immediately outside the property are beautiful sand dunes. Head out in the morning for a breathtaking view!
A traditional Roman coliseum very well preserved and definitely not as busy as the one in Rome! You can leisurely explore this sight and snap some great photos.
Riding a camel in the desert of Douz is a must! Be sure to wear the traditional bedouin robe and the head scarf as it gets windy and sandy out there! Sunglasses are also a necessity.
If you have time, it is worth a stop but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. The one plus is that it gives you a good view of the city from the tower.
My day in Dougga was my favorite from my entire time in Tunisia. The site doesn't get a lot of tourists therefore it is almost like the place is all yours! The ruins sprawl over several acres alongside olive trees.
Gorgeous town located on a hillside above the Mediterranean Sea with all the buildings painted in a blue and white scheme. While you're here, be sure to try the fried pastry (similar to a doughnut) as this was the only place where we found them!
Comfortable shoes are a must as there is a lot of walking on hills.
The ruins at Antonin Bath are spectacular and fun to explore. The basic structure still stands and you can walk through the rooms that used to be pools and baths. It is set right next to the Sea and has nice ocean views.
One of my favorite Greek restaurants! Everything on the menu is delicious! Tzatziki and their pita bread is a must order and I usually get a veggie pita with their signature Opa fries.
The Willow Glen store is tiny so come early and expect to wait for a table on busy evenings. Take out is available.
Experiencing the Ganges River is a must-do on any trip to India. I did both a sunrise and sunset boat trip to see the traditions that have been happening here for years.
Very cool structure located in Orchha, India. You can easily spend a few hours here getting lost in the courtyards and balconies and taking pictures of the beautiful countryside.
I really enjoyed my time in Chitwan National Park. I stayed in the outer zone at Sapana Village Lodge and did day trips into the official park. I did the safari by elephant as I was told you could get closer to wildlife. We spotted several animals (unfortunately, no tigers) but lots of rhinos.
Every show at Comedy Sportz is different which makes it so exciting and a great, budget-friendly outing with friends. The performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings and resemble "Who's Line Is It Anyways?". I always end of laughing and the content is family friendly.
One of my favorite restaurants in San Jose. I bring my friends here and everyone always loves it!
Start your meal with an appetizer like corn fritters or the flat bread. Most everything is family style so order a ton and go to town! But, be sure to save room for dessert. The fried banana with coconut gelato is amazing!!
A colleague introduced me to Psycho Donuts. It looked like a typical donut box but the contents were completely shocking: regular donuts decorated with all kinds of deliciousness. Take the "Cereal Killer" which is a traditional donut, frosted, with pieces of cereal on top! Visit their website for pictures of all their creations.
High-rise property in Sao Paulo located in the Tatuape neighborhood. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable and the staff was very helpful and friendly. It is located a little off the main tourist routes so expect to take a car or taxi places.
It's very cool to be in the southernmost city in the world. Ushuaia is very small and you can walk the whole town very quickly but take time to admire the beauty of the area and venture on day trips to nearby treasures like Tierra del Fuego.
If you're staying in Panama City and want to immerse yourself in a more natural setting, head to Gamboa which will transport you into the rainforest. The accommodations and service are both excellent and there is a variety of activities to do. I did the zip line and really enjoyed it.
Spectacular Engineering marvel. The public tour only runs on Saturday and varies between crossing the full canal or just doing half of it. Definitely plan on being in Panama on a Saturday to experience this.
Quaint ski resort town outside of Innsbruck. Definitely worth a visit any time of year! Winter offers ski, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating while summer allows for hiking and other outdoor activities.
To escape from the tiny and bustling streets of Venice, head north to Padova. Beautiful town with some sites (mainly churches) and a large park in the center. Head to the local grocery store, pick up some food, and have a picnic near the fountain.
Beautiful bridge in Venice. Expect a lot of crowds on the bridge. The best vantage point is actually from a water taxi or water bus so you can capture the entire bridge in your photo.
Absolutely amazing! I have never seen escalators so steep! And when you factor in the various levels and all signs being in Russian, it is the ultimate adventure!
I actually did a guided tour which helped a lot! Instead of just merely going from Point A to Point B, we took the time to appreciate the artwork inside and exploring the maze of tracks. I would recommend doing a tour like this on one of your first days in Moscow to help get acclimated.
If you've ever wanted to stay in a palace, here is your chance! It isn't cheap but the experience is well worth it. All rooms are suites and are very unique. The room I stayed in had two bedrooms, one bathroom, a small kitchen, and a family room.
Perhaps my two favorite places in the hotel were the rooftop patio and the breakfast room. The rooftop had amazing views of Firenze and they will serve you food and drink up there, if requested. The breakfast room was amazing--cathedral ceilings and amazing food!!
Located right near Ponte Vecchio and a short walk to all the other sites.
The property is located in between the major Roman sites and the Vatican City. The neighborhood is bustling with locals which makes your Roman experience that much more authentic. The rooms are large and comfortable. Easy walk to everything.
Charming property located in the Latin Quarter of Paris. When you look at the price, you get a great value: clean, comfortable rooms, great location, and a friendly, English-speaking staff. I was amazed at how everything was literally at my doorstep: loads of restaurants, Internet cafes, public transportation and even monuments/sights. When I go back to Paris, I will definitely stay here again.
Centrally-located property in Pokhara with large, comfortable rooms. The staff was very accommodating and provided me with a space heater and extra blankets when I was cold.
Good, safe hotel in the Lumbini area of Nepal (near to the India border). It's a good stopping point for overland travel between India and Nepal. This hotel is gated with a guard, has its own restaurant, and comfortable rooms.
I absolutely loved my day at Deer Valley, a ski-only resort in Park City, Utah. The staff is world-class and the customer service is off the charts. I was continually impressed with how proactive and helpful they were.
The lifts and slopes were in great condition, easy to navigate, and lots of fun. My favorite moment was my afternoon hot chocolate at one of the chalets at the top of the mountain. What a treat!
I would definitely go back here again for my ski trips.
Huge resort! I spent a few hours skiing thinking I had covered a ton of ground only to find out I had only touched 10% of the resort!
The staff is great -- very accommodating and friendly.
Food is expensive but there aren't really any alternatives without heading back to the base of the mountain. Plan to budget $15-20 per day per person for food and drink.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express during my ski weekend in Park City and was very pleased with the experience. It is easy to find, right off of the main highway. Plenty of free parking.
The staff was very welcoming and helped us with purchasing lift tickets and getting settled in. We were also given some great dining and gear rental recommendations within walking distance of the property.
I skied at The Canyons one day and Deer Valley another day and never spent more than 10 minutes in the car.
The hotel amenities are also nice. The lifts usually close around 4pm and the front desk person will usually have warm cookies out for people returning from the slopes. The pool and hot tub are also a nice addition after a day of skiing. The hotel breakfast was included and pretty good.
I would definitely come back her if I head to Park City in the future.
If you head out to Southern Utah, be sure to plan a day to see Arches National Park. The rock formations are breathtaking and the contrast of the red rocks and blue sky makes for great photos.
If options rains in the afternoon so be sure to pack an umbrella or jacket.
Boulder is a great, laid back town outside of Denver. I love the downtown strip. Lots of good restaurant and shops. If you enjoy outdoor recreation (biking, hiking, etc), you will LOVE it here.
Not the tallest jump in New Zealand but certainly one of the most beautiful. The bridge, basin, and river create a great atmosphere for you to officially take the plunge!
They truly do live up to their name! The valley they create is absolutely breathtaking so plan to spend a few days here to take it all in and participate in all the recreational activities (bungee, rafting, skydiving, to name a few).
One of my favorite sights in New Zealand. Even though the weather was somewhere between a mist and a sprinkle, Milford Sound was still so beautiful and peaceful! A must-do on any trip to the region.
Large theme part located right near the border of San Jose and Santa Clara. Lots of rides, a water park, and shows. If you don't want to bother with parking, take the VTA Light Rail which has a stop nearby.
An excellent venue for sporting events. I have seen ice hockey and tennis played here and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Concerts are alright but try to sit in the lower section.
Great museum but my favorite part is actually the museum cafe! I often come here with friends for the delicious salads and sandwiches they serve. They also sell Hip Pop popcorn which is a treat for any popcorn lover!
Full-service hotel located in the heart of downtown San Jose. Literally, dozens of dining and entertainment options at your doorstep and a great pool located on about the 3rd of 4th floor of the building.
Beautiful property in South San Jose. If you're looking for a hotel with a relaxed vibe that "gets you away from it all", look no further than the Hayes Mansion. Sprawling grounds, a swimming pool, a full-service spa, and dining options, make this an oasis in the middle of suburbia.
If it weren`t for you I would have fallen into a pit of snakes and died a slow horrible death. Instead I got all my travel expenses paid for, found the love of my life and lived happily ever after.
The reason I wanted to come to India! Seeing it for the first time was magical! Plan to spend a few hours here to get pictures from all vantage points. If you have booties to cover your shoes, you can walk on the marble without leaving your shoes in the cubbies (we all remember that scene from Slumdog Millionaire!).
Stop here while you're in Jaipur. To get the perfect picture, go inside the shop across the street which has a balcony that allows you to get the entire facade in a photo.
Basic hotel in a suburb of Delhi, India. My room was surprisingly large but the bed was hard as a rock (which I found was pretty normal for India!). Friendly staff who were able to arrange a taxi for me to use for the day.
I love going to Campo di Bocce for corporate functions, birthday parties, or just a fun gathering with friends. The price is reasonable and the ambiance is wonderful - especially on warm summer nights when you can play outside.
The food and drink are quite good too. You can order appetizers and pizza while playing or enjoy a sit down meal.
Must-do on any visit to Rome. It gets quite crowded but the tradition of throwing a coin in the fountain and making a wish is well worth the crowds! Take special case with your personal belongings since everyone is in a tight space.
I went to Rome in springtime and loved the greenery that surrounded the Colisseum. Allot a few hours to explore the property and either bring a guidebook or hire a local guide to help you really understand the history of this magnificent place.
I visited the famous Spanish Steps and loved the general ambiance. A little crowded and lots of merchants selling things but a good stop on any trip to Rome.
I fell in love with this quaint city. My days were spent getting lost in the small alley ways, discovering a new restaurant or shop. The people were friendly, the food was delicious, and the island is absolutely gorgeous!
I went to Piazza San Marco twice last year and enjoyed seeing it in both spring and summer. It is worth a look and some photos but venture off the main plaza for more reasonably-priced cafes, shops, and restaurants!
Fun street to either walk or drive down. On weekends, it gets pretty backed up with traffic so parking in a nearby neighborhood and walking it may be more effective! But, if you come midweek, you can drive down it without much wait.
I stayed here during my holiday and had mixed review. My room was large but came with many issues (noisy air conditioner, broken bathroom door). Per other travelers, we were in an older building so if you purposefully request one of the newer buildings or a nicer room, you may have better luck.
The beach and pools are both nice and the on-site scuba center was great. One of my travel mates even got certified with them and was able to do all her training in the hotel's pool before heading to the open ocean.
The other main downside was the location. If you don't plan on leaving the resort, you're fine. But, if you want to venture to Santo Domingo, expect a 30-45 minute drive.
Lovely resort right on the waterfront in the quaint town of Westbrook. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Hotel amenities are plentiful - restaurants, bar, and plenty of recreation.
Stayed here for a wedding and loved the ambiance. I would love to come back here for a relaxing holiday.
I visited the Argentinian side of the falls on a day when it decided to rain, be windy, thunder, and lightning...all at the same time! Nonetheless, my friend and I had an adventure. We were determined to make it to the farthest look-out point so we bought ponchos, hoped on the train, and ran as fast as we could on slick metal bridges to see it with our own eyes!
While visiting Iguassu Falls, I opted for the Best Western Falls Galli Hotel. The location was kind of random but taxis were cheap and readily available so we never had any problems.
Our room was huge with a large bathroom. The hotel also had several amenities my friend and I utilized including the swimming pool, massage center, and restaurant.
I stayed at this hotel during my visit to Rio. It is just a few blocks from the beach in a quiet, residential neighborhood. There were several restaurants, Internet cafes, and shops in the immediate area.
The hotel itself had clean and comfortable rooms and a great rooftop pool that has great views.
Great view from the top (if the weather cooperates!) and the railway to get there is quite fun too.
The fog got in the way of my photos and I only got a few shots of Christ the Redeemer. Nonetheless, it was a neat experience and I am glad I was able to see one of the New 7 Wonders!
The Scandic Bromma was a great hotel for many reasons; the only downside, a little out of the way from downtown. But, as a consolation, the Brommaplan metro stop was literally right outside our door. Within 15 minutes, I could be in the city center.
The hotel itself has a wonderful staff, plentiful breakfast buffet, adequate rooms, and other amenities like free bicycles to take out. Within the same area as the hotel is a free places to eat and a couple grocery stores.
Gorgeous resort situated right next to Snoqualmie Falls about 30 minutes outside of Seattle. The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, and many have fireplaces. There are a couple dining options within the property: an upscale restaurant as well as a more casual option. If you opt for the nicer option, make reservations earlier in the day.
Be sure to allot some time for a hike around the falls and prepare to get wet if you get close!
If you're in the Seattle area, it is worth stopping at the Boeing Museum. The museum covers the history of flights all the way into modern aircraft. You probably need 2-3 hours maximum to see everything.
My friend and I went to the Statue of Liberty during my visit to New York. We bought our tickets online ahead of time which allowed us to skip some of the lines. We also got to go inside the monument since we had pre-purchased -- another incentive to plan ahead!
My favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in the South Bay. Consistently get good service and always get delicious food. The complimentary starter is amazing. It is a mix of herbs and seeds covered in olive oil served with fresh-from-the-oven pita bread. You could easily make a meal from it but you need to save room because their entrees are quite tasty (and decent sized!).
Found this restaurant as part of a GroupOn deal and I will definitely be coming back! Nice ambiance and even better food. I started with the baked brie appetizer, followed by a salad and soup combo, and finished with dessert (creme brulee). Service was speedy and friendly.
My favorite Italian restaurant in the Bay Area! Delicious food, impeccable service in an off-the-beaten path location.
Vito's in located in the Skyport business plaza but it truly a treasure. Homemade Italian specialties as well as some more fusion dishes await you. Complimented by their signature bread lightly brushed with garlic and oil, you will leave with a full belly! Leave room for dessert too - I personally LOVE their Bananas Foster. It is homemade pound cake, vanilla gelato, carmelized bananas served in a martini glass. I have to resist the temptation to go in and just get that for my entree!
Delicious Moroccan restaurant in San Jose! The place only is open for dinner and does a great job of serving traditional food in an authentic environment. Seating is on the floor on pillows (and some couches), there are no utensils, and you end your meal with blissful mint tea and baklava.
A friend suggested I meet her here for brunch and I couldn't believe the line wrapped around the block! We waited about an hour or so, ordered at the counter, and were amazed at how fast our meals came out! Service was wonderful and the food was quite good too. I had pancakes with fresh berries and maple syrup - great combo. They also had lots of fresh baked breads but I didn't succumb to them since I was already indulging in pancakes!
Decent, budget-friendly hotel in Moscow. It is part of the old Olympic Village from the 1980 games so you'll find people at the "Alpha", "Beta", "Gamma", etc.
Great location near the Metro stop (appox. 3-5 minute walk) but limited food options nearby. Rooms were clean but small and do not have black-out curtains so, if you go in summer, bring an eye mask to help you sleep!
The hotel has a good location, right along the river and a very short walk into town. I stayed in the tented area which was essentially a hotel room in a tent! I had a bed, shower, toilet, sink, and even a TV! If you go with a group, the tented area is fun since you have a central area to socialize.
I agree with the other review -- the staff was the only downside. A little pushy and not the most helpful.
Property also has a pool, spa facility, and restaurant.
I did the flight over Mt. Everest and it is truly a spectacular sight. The total flight takes 1 hour but you need to arrive early and wait for optimal flight conditions (we were approx. 1-2 hours delayed). Plan to do this excursion on a day when you have some time to wait. Everyone has a window seat so everyone will get a chance to see the mountain up close.
Stayed at this property during my trip to Nepal and was very impressed with the owner/staff and location. The owner was very accommodating and always willing to give advice about where to go for dinner or what activities to do. The location was very close to the main strip full of other hotels/hostels, restaurants, and shops.
I somehow managed to get the honeymoon suite at the Serengeti Sopa Lodge thought I was traveling on my own. What a treat that was -- I had a two-story room overlooking the Serengeti with a large bath tub, huge shower (both indoor and outdoor), and patio.
Staff was helpful and location was good. Property also has a swimming pool.
I couldn't believe how close the Pyramids are to the city of Cairo! One moments we're driving through a neighorhood and I gaze out the window to see the silhouette of the pyramid!
Definitely plan to spend an entire day here and try to go earlier in the morning to avoid the tour buses that come later in the morning. The Sphinx and a camel ride will fill out the rest of your day.
There are people trying to sell you stuff everywhere in Egypt, but especially at tourist sites like this. My advice? Avoid making eye contact--sunglasses are great for this (as well as from the bright sun in Egypt!). If you are interested in buying something, be ready to bargain.
Stayed here during my time in Cairo and really enjoyed the service and amenities the property had to offer. Great location right along the river and access to many restaurants and shopping areas.
Breakfast buffet is huge and offers pretty much anything you'd want (both Egyptian and Western options).
I stayed at this hotel in Beijing and was pleased with the modern rooms, great location, and impressive service. The location feels like a suburban neighborhood so you can actually interact with the local residents but still only be a short walk or bus ride to the major sites.
You can experience Underwater World Singapore in two ways: the traditional aquarium way or the adventurous way! I opted for the latter and decided to get in the tank with the creatures instead of just viewing them from outside. Through their "Dive with the Sharks" activity, I was able to swim amongst the sharks in the tank and also help feed the sting rays and manatee!
I also ventured over to their Dolphin Lagoon where I got to feed and help train the pink dolphins. Such a cool experience!
I recommend pre-booking your excursions if possible. I did so through their website.
My day at Sentosa was by far my favorite day in Singapore. In the morning, I helped the staff at the Singapore Aquarium feed the animals and in later did the Dolphin experience. The afternoon was spent having a leisurely lunch near the beach. Truly a gem and a relaxing contrast the the hustle and bustle of the Singapore proper.
I enjoyed staying at this property during my trip to Singapore. The rooms were spacious and clean and the hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating. I took available of the on-site sauna and massage and was pleased with the service.
It has a great location -- close to the city center and lots of shopping and restaurants (Orchard Street).
I stayed here as part of a study abroad program and loved it. I had one of their triple rooms and we had more than enough space for three girls! The restaurant provided delicious meals and other eating options are within walking distance.
Lots of options for things to do in the area. The ocean is a mere 5-minute walk and the diving in the region is amazing! This part of the reef is much less commercial than Cairns.
I stayed at the Arusha Coffee Lodge at the end of a three week trip to the Kenya/Tanzania area and loved the property. I had my very own plantation house with a plush bed, large bathroom, and a sitting room.
The hotel is an active coffee plantation so you can see the beans being harvested and they also offer amazing coffee. Coming from someone who never drinks coffee, I couldn't get enough of their iced coffee!!
Great, reasonably-priced gift shop with handicraft from the local area.
Crossing the Drake Passage was amazing. We had a "calm crossing" per our crew. We were lucky to be able to be out on deck most of the passage and see dolphins playfully jumping in the wake that our boat created. Perhaps the most magnificent day was when we spotted our first iceberg and were officially nearing the white continent.
The Great Barrier Reef is hands down the best scuba diving and snorkeling I have ever done. The quantity and variety of marine life is amazing and the corals are stunning. The Cairns part of the reef is slightly commercial but still beautiful.
I visited the Falls while staying at the nearby Lao Spirit Resort. The waterfall has so many levels and you can spend hours here sitting on a rock gazing out at the beautiful countryside or climbing the rocks in the falls. I highly recommend wearing water shoes so you get some traction on the rocks and don't cut your feet! Swimwear is also helpful.
For a truly amazing day, pack a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon here!
Santana Row is a never development in San Jose featuring high-end shopping, a hotel, residential living, restaurants, nightlife, and a movie theater.
The shopping and restaurant choices are great. My favorite dining establishments are Thea (Greek), Amber India (Indian), and Roux (Cajun).
There are dozens of spas and salons at the Row too. For a high-end experience, visit Burke Williams at the Hotel Valencia. By purchasing a treatment, you have full access to their spa facilities which are plentiful! For a more budget-friendly option, InSpa has massages, facials, and nail treatments and has a no tipping policy!
The only downside to Santana Row is parking. The traffic lights just to turn into the area get backed up and, once you're in, you can sometimes spend 20-30 minutes looking for a space. Unfortunately, the only public transport nearby is buses so car is usually your only option. If you can, try to avoid peak times (weekends, some weekday evenings) or allot a little extra time to finding a space. Or you can opt for valet (~$7 plus tip).
The Hotel Strass has the best location in Mayrhofen - right in the center of town and at the foot of the ski slopes. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are comfortable.
Be sure to also check out the spa area and the restaurant. There is also an adjoining bar/club to the property.
I was so happy I opted for the three hour drive from Beijing to the Simatai section of the Great Wall of China. It is practically empty and allows for you to experience the site without the crowds. Allow for a few hours to walk the entire portion of the wall and back down and grab a bite to eat at the small restuarant near the entrance (it looked like a hole in the wall but was the best meal I had in all of China!).
A wonderful property - wish I could have spent more time here! The breakfast buffet was huge and help energize me for an exciting day in Helsinki. The location of the property is a short walk (5 minutes) to the ferry terminal and about 10 minutes to the main strip.
The hotel offers free bikes to use (first come, first serve) as well as three computers in the lobby with free Internet access. The gym and sauna facilities are adequate and there is a small laundry room where you can do your own laundry for a fee.
The staff is very friendly and helpful and helped make my stay very enjoyable.
I loved the time I spent at the Sapana Village Lodge. Dhurba Giri, the owner, and his staff took excellent care of my group and I during our stay. Each day provided just enough structure to experience the local area but also allowed for lazy afternoons on the riverfront patio. My daytime activities included elephant rides in Chitwan National Park, bike riding through the local village, and visiting the local elephant sanctuary.
Dhurba places a strong emphasis on integrating with the local community so many activities allow a glimpse into the villager's lives and almost all building materials, decorating materials, and food products are produced locally.
I have been going to the Tech since I was a child and love their regular exhibits just as much as the special features they get every year. The staff is welcoming and friendly and really encourage visitors, both adults and children, to interact with the exhibits versus just looking at them. I also love attending IMAX movies which are shown in the same building in the Hackworth Dome.
This city and hotel were truly the highlight of my trip to Southeast Asia. The property was located on the hillside along the river in the countryside and had beautifully appointed rooms with outdoor showers, large bath tubs, and balconies. The restaurants provided most of our meals and were we delighted with the food and service.
The excursion options were wonderful -- everything from kayaking to elephant rides to biking through the local village. My favorite side trip was visiting the Tad Sae Waterfall. If you go, bring a water shoe so you can walk the many levels of this waterfall.
Kristina is amazing. Somehow she gets her job done in an excellent manner and still finds time to travel. She is my secondary methond of travel, vicariously. Hearing the stories and seeing pictures of all the amazing places she has visited, and is planning is inspiring even to someone of my advanced age. Although older I haven't grown up and if I ever do I want to travel just like Kristina, here there and everywhere.

Kristina is our HR person at work and the best HR person I've ever had. Probably the only HR person I like so far, lol. She is so full of positive energy, personable, confident, knows her work well and very interesting and fun to be around. She does more than a great job in helping me with the office stuff, but she is the first person I run to when I start planning for a holiday. She is easily the most traveled person I know of. She is full of tips, insights and her repoirtere of travel fun facts is always fresh. Thumbs up for the best HR person ever.......

One of my fondest memories of Kristina was when we were on the Argentina side of Iguazu Falls caught in the middle of a torrential downpour and lightening storm, running for our lives across a metal bridge, completely soaking wet, despite our rain ponchos. We then had the good fortune of getting stuck on the tram for two hours due to a tree falling on the tracks. Never a dull moment :)
