Its a fab travel base and I have been lucky enough to see alot of the countryside and western Europe. Two year work visas are awesome. So far I have managed to escape London and am trying to meet as many locals as i can. I will crash on any couch or floor :-) I spent last year backpacking thru Africa and made it Cape Town to Marrakesh via Cairo. The only country I flew over was Algeria. Awesome adventure, so many stories and highlights to share. Like climbing to the top of Mt Kili, the roof of Africa for sunrise, sharing the floor of the slow ferry to Jordan with a bunch of Mecca pilgrims, even having malaria in Ethiopia... I'm not sure that was a highlight but an interesting insight into health care and why so many people die of this horrid disease. My biggest achievement was making it to Everest Base Camp, especially considering it was eight weeks after being in a Thai hospital with pneumonia. And finally seeing the Taj Mahal after planning to since I was eight years old. The two craziest things I've done was getting my nose pierced in Bangladesh and getting quarantined off a plane in Sydney. If anyone needs a travel buddy, I'm totally up for the adventure!! Some great cafes and numerous glass shops. Combine for a day trip with other islands on a 12hour vaporitto pass. ![]() Venice, Veneto Region, Italy ![]() Added Mar 12, 2011 Its the kind of place that would be good for families, not so great for the backpacker or anyone who misses the last 9:30pm ferry back. Location-wise its a 25min ferry ride from the stop near the Acadamia Bridge. Its clean, cabins are nice and there is a pizzeria on site. Its basic and away from alot of the action. Staff were great and really friendly, but for me, the bottom line was it was too far away. ![]() Fes, Morocco ![]() Added Feb 28, 2011 Its a little out of the old city, but a cheap cab ride, and has excellent breakfasts. Its very clean, and has a nice courtyard for a G&T. The main advantage is it is in a local environment- the hammam just around the corner is excellent and extremely well priced. ![]() Porto, Northern Portgual Region, Portugal ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 Oporto Poets is one of the best places I have ever stayed. The staff are really friendly, and they will organise surfing lessons, Fado evenings and regularly cook amazing three course incl table wine dinners for 8 euro. I would recommend staying here, I extended and stayed a week. Would love to go back. ![]() Zagreb, Central Croatia, Croatia ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 My highlight from Zagreb- standing in the crisp morning air in a little patch of sunshine in Dolac, eating a blood red orange that I'd bought from a local for 1 kuna, and he had kindly sliced it for me. It was the yummiest orange I'd ever tasted. ![]() Zagreb, Central Croatia, Croatia ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 An amazing roof! It was one of my highlights of Zagreb, really beautiful. Not much inside. ![]() Zagreb, Central Croatia, Croatia ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 Really good museum, highlight is the exit- a slide from top to bottom!!! Good value for 30 kuna, allow a couple of hours. Take the Saport tram from the city centre. ![]() Reykjavik, Iceland ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 Its a very clean hotel, with TV and comfortable rooms. Breakfast was really good, and the 24 hour reception is perfect for those late arriving Friday night flights! Its a lovely walk along the seafront into town, and you could see the ocean from our room. It is a bit out of town, but most day tours will pick up from the hotel. ![]() Reykjavik, Iceland ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 Really good coffee! Some of the best coffee I've had in Europe. You can get this brand of coffee in alot of places, but I'd reccommend the cafe in the centre of town- its packed with locals on the weekend and has a really cosy atmosphere. ![]() Reykjavik, Iceland ![]() Added Feb 27, 2011 These are the best hot dogs in the entire world. I went back, they were simply scrummy. You must get them with the lot, it costs about 180 kroner. ![]() Wadi Halfa', Sudan ![]() Added Nov 10, 2009 Lake Nasser is a fair walk from Wadi Halfa, especially in fifty degree heat! Save the view for the ferry to Egypt and spend your time in Wadi Halfa instead, with a cold drink and a falafel. The ferry is the best view of the lake. ![]() Usakos, Northwestern Namibia, Namibia ![]() Added Oct 31, 2009 Bush camping, great rock formations and the big wide outdoors. If you are an avid photographer my tip is- the place takes the best long exposure night shots! Take a few hours for some bush walking to take in the views, and snap a few pictures, its very hard to take a bad picture here! Some great climbing, but the whole place is fairly isolated. ![]() Namibia ![]() Added Oct 31, 2009 The Etosha Pan was a most enjoyable way to spend two days game driving, had an awesome time and saw a heap of animals. Didnt manage to see the "Big 5" here but it was a great experience and stunning locations. Staying in the park is also fab, with excellent waterholes to sit by and just watch giraffe drinking at dusk. The camp grounds were pretty good, nice facilities. ![]() Alexandria, Mediterranean Coast, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 18, 2009 A converted three story house, this is now a museum (i wish i could remember the history of the house- there is a story and i have forgotten it! please fill me in if you know it), its a little less crowded than the Cairo version, and you can take pictures- no flash tho! The converted bomb bunker in the basement has been set up as a tomb, and it has a collection of ancient Egyptian items, Greek and Roman ruins and the Christian influences upstairs. worth the visit, and if you have your international student cards, its 50% off. far less crowed than Cairo too! ![]() Alexandria, Mediterranean Coast, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 18, 2009 The modern library was beautiful, so much space for books and they have great displays of artwork and exhibitions. Its great for a chill out, esp if you are templed out after spending a month in Egypt! ![]() Cairo, Cairo & Surrounding Region, Egypt ![]() Added Oct 17, 2009 The hotel is clean, with a fridge and TV in the room and nice hot showers! The rooms are a fairly good size. The best thing about King Hotel is the free Wifi in the reception area, its fantastic if you have your own laptop. The staff are friendly and helpful, and its close to a supermarket, ATMs and Dominos. Location wise, its within walking distance to Zamelek, you can take a taxi to downtown, should only cost 5LE, walk to the street and get your own cab, because the taxis waiting outside the King Hotel are a rip off and will try to charge you at least four times the price. Overall, it was a nice place to stay and i would stay here again. ![]() Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 I didnt stay here but this place has an awesome bar, great dance music and pool. Its the place everyone goes to hang out and drink. Its a must check out in Vic Falls. ![]() Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 If its a clear day- GO! the weather can be a bit unpredictable so make sure you make the most of a nice day. Cable car is the easy option but there are some guys sitting up there with absail equipment so have some rand handy if you make an impromtu decision. view is awesome, coffee shop up the top too! ![]() Moshi, Northeastern Tanzania, Tanzania ![]() Added Oct 5, 2009 Midnight ascent. You leave the relative warmth of your tent, wearing every possible item of clothing you possess in Kilimanjaro National Park. Its cold, bitterly cold. Two pairs of thermal socks and I still cannot feel my feet. You trek, and maybe its a good thing that you cannot see the peak, or know how far you have left to climb. Keep the focus on your small circle of light radiating from your head torch. Keep the focus on putting one foot in front of the other. All you can see are small lights making their way up this big black hill. And if you turn around, you see the lights of Moshi, burning brightly as little spots way down in the distance. At the last hill, as the dawn breaks, i ask Alen, my guide to hold my hand as we climb the last of Stella Point. Not for a pull up, but as guidence, and strength for the last of the climb. Exhausted, i am at Stella Point. "Turn around, turn around" came Alen's anxious call. I blink, summon the last of my fleeting engery and turn. What i see made the midnight climb all worth every step. The sun is just starting to appear over the edge, and here i am sitting on the rim of Kilimanjaro's crater watching it. We walked to the sign, had the essential photos to prove, one day, to my disbelieving future children, who will probably think that i am "uncool" and never did anything like climb the highest mountain in Africa. I also ate my packed of tim tams that i had carried around Africa for two months, saving to celebrate this particular moment. The climb. Its enjoyable, its tough but incredibly worth it. The scenary is spectacular. Kilimanjaro is not for the faint hearted and i would recommend that you train for a few months before hand, as advised by your doctor or physiotherapist. I traveled with Zara, a fantastic local operater. See www.zaratours.com if you want details, and ask for Alen, he is wonderful. I did the 6 day Machame, but i would do it in seven days next time. ![]() Jinja, Uganda ![]() Added Oct 2, 2009 Mainly grade 3, 4 or 5 (there is a grade six but you can't raft it) rapids this is the best rafting in the world. On the source of the Nile. Companies like Adrift, based in Jinja will offer you a half, full or two days rafting including really great food. You will even get a DVD screening back at the bar when you clean up. Look out for the 3m waterfall- amazing!! ![]() Cyrene, Libya ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 The ruins here are stunning, well preserved, and are right on the coast. Diving expeditions are, i believe, still finding new ruins. Must see is the Roman theatre at the east side of the sight. ![]() Cyrene, Libya ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 This is a stunning location for a theatre! The clear turquoise sea, the stunning ruins, the herd of goats wondering thru with their gelaber clad herdsman, the absolute stunning preservation of this site, the fact that there is no other tourists for miles... i hope it stays this way! ![]() Cyrene, Libya ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Cyrene is a wonderful site, and often gets overlooked by Leptis Magna, and it is just as, if not more impressive, being the Greek city that was settled in 7 BC. The Temple of Apollo, is in a complex of a a few temples plus a bank (you had to pay to go!) plus there is the Fountain of Apollo, in which local boys were swimming in when i was there! It hasnt been overun by tourists, so is still in great condition. Which does make me hesitate to reccommend it because it is so well preserved! ![]() Tunis, Tunisia ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Home to the star wars set- Luke's home in the first original star wars, the actual film site is a little disapointing, i guess i expected more from a former star wars set, but you can visit Hotel Sidi Driss, even if you arent staying there. If you can, visit a Troglodyte family, it wont cost you much and stay for freshly baked wood fired bread with home made honey or olive oil. One of the best experiences you can have in Tunisia! ![]() Tunis, Tunisia ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 This area is a dream for photography, its nice for a coffee, but the shops reflect tourist prices. 7 TD for a cappacino!! There is a nice beach area at the bottom of the hill, near the boat area, and its easily accessible by metro, about a 20min walk. If you arent staying here, it is well worth the trip for the day from Tunis. ![]() Carthage, Tunis & Surrounds, Tunisia ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 After spending the week before in Libya, where the ruins of Sabratha, Leptis Magna and Cyrene are absolutely spectacular, I was not as impressed by the ruins of Carthage. If you havent been lucky enough to visit Libya, or you are an archeologist, i am sure you will be impressed by these sites. The most impressive one I thought was the water storage area. The best thing about the site is the panoramic view of Tunis. ![]() Kairouan, Central Tunisia, Tunisia ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 I had visited a few mosques by the time i'd ended up at this one, and let me tell you it is impressive, mainly for its size and use of "recycling". What i mean by recycling is old Roman columns have been used in this mosque, sometimes they match, sometimes not, and the wonderful ways that height has been matched between columns of differing size. Remember ladies to bring a scarf as a head covering out of respect and dress appropriately- no shoulders showing please! You can buy postcards or leather handbags outside the doorway as well. ![]() Gonder, Ethiopia ![]() Added Sep 11, 2009 The castles are easy to explore- we hired a guide for about 200 birr for a group of six, which made the whole experience more memorable and more interesting as we were given the stories behind the places. The baths are a short distance away, best reached by local mini bus or hire a tuk tuk. If your passing thru Gondar, i would explore these interesting castles. Can be done in half a day. ![]() Lalibela, Ethiopia ![]() Added Sep 11, 2009 Despite being desperately ill with malaria, i made the 9 hour mini bus ride to Lalibela from Bahir Dar. Seeing St George Church made the journey worth it, and i would make the same choice over again. Personally i found St George the most impressive of the churches i saw (i could only manage half a day due to the malaria) and the outside is amazing. Look at the walls of the surrounding rock- there are still mummies in graves! ![]() Tripoli, Tripoli, Libya ![]() Added Sep 10, 2009 This is the centre of Tripoli, the place where it all happens. One side faces the sea, one side has the old Souk and museum, one side has the roads to access the rest of Tripoli, one side has coffee shops and streets that have the bookshop and cheap eats. Its the place you go to to get orientated and get a taxi easily. Walking distance to most things you will need or want. ![]() Cyrene, Libya ![]() Added Sep 10, 2009 Temple of Zeus... Situated on the hill above the ruins of Cyrene, this amazing temple is a work in progress with plans to restore the upper stonework. The size is breath taking, and as there was no other tourists, we had the temple to ourselves and were free to explore the fern filled interior. It completes a wonderful visit to the amazing Cyrene ruins and is highly recommended. We had a picnic on the seats near where my photo is taken from with this spectacular backdrop. This is a must do when visiting Libya. ![]() Berry, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 Country Thai places can be really bad. This place however was not. The food was delish and authentic and the guy running the front counter was priceless- a real Aussie gem. If your in the area, and it is a great area, this is the place for a family Thai outing or even take away. Its not a big shop so maybe book. Seemed very popular with the locals- a great sign! ![]() Bangalow, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 11, 2008 I actually thought the markets were on a sunday, and its the 4th sunday of the month. But contact Lismore Visitor Centre to confirm. These markets are fantastic, set in the Byron Hinterland. Cool stuff! ![]() Lukla, Nepal ![]() Added Dec 11, 2008 Two for one cocktails for 300 Rs, pool table and Coldplay. We were set for the evening! ![]() Hobart, Tasmania, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Great views from the top. Bring a jacket- it can be cold and windy up there. Easiset way to get there is by bus, unless you are feeling very energetic! Some Hobart tours include this so sort out your travel plans. ![]() Hobart, Tasmania, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 The centre of shopping in Hobart! Mainly brand shops from memory but i enjoyed spending a morning here. ![]() Bangladesh ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Isnt it a great story?!? Valet KFC in Dhaka. Have never loved KFC as much as i did that day. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 This place rocks! A cool hang out place. Food is great, so many places to choose from and its a great spot to grab some drinks. Totally recommended. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Sunday afternoons with music and a drink...perfect ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Newtown is a little more chilled than the heart of the city- great food, bars etc. Had so many good evenings here and you can really do anything from dinner, drinking, plays, bands. Would recommend coming out here for a few nights out. ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 I had a great night here when i visited Canberra for a weekend. Our group had a great time hanging out in the downstairs bar and then moved up to the club to dance. A very memorable night! ![]() Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 I am still craving the chips from last time i was in Melbourne!! Completely the best fries ever and the range of toppings is incredible! Go for the box over the cup- much easier to eat!! ![]() Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Max Brenner Parramatta is good but lacks atmosphere. As per usual food and chocolate are great but Manly or Paddington Max's have more character. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 In the heart of circular quay. Grab a coffee and sit and relax. Can be a bit busy at times and loud if theres lots of street performers music but it all adds to the atmosphere ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 We used to start some of our uni pub crawls here. Great spot, have your own rocks pub crawl and check this baby out. Good food, great view. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Dec 10, 2008 Great place at first but the novelty does wear off. They are good pancakes but can be sickly sweet and over the top. If thats your thing, you'll love it! ![]() Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 This is the steepest train track in the southern hemisphere. I would recommend doing the walk from the 3 sisters to the base of the railway and get an awesome ride back up. If you can, get into the front seat for the best ride! ![]() Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 About two hours from the centre of sydney are the Blue Mtns and its worth the visit. There are heaps of walks- the 1000 staircase round to the scenic railway would have to be one of my fave walks in Katoomba, but there are tons of other walks. Make sure you wear good shoes and take water, and if your planning a longer walk, jump on the national parks website for details of where to camp etc. Always let somewhere know where you are going and when you will be back. And DON'T stray off the track! This is both for your safety and protection of the bush! If walks arent your thing, there are heaps of vantage points for good photos, scenic railway, shops. The shopping is fantastic, heaps of quirky things. I love the Leura Lolly Shop! ![]() Orchha, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 The beauty of places like this is that it provides employment for local women. Support them by buying gorgeous paper products to take home. Packs flat in your backpack as well!! You can be taken around the paper making places and its fascinating to see everything being made by hand. They will even let you have a go!! So come here for your cards, business cards, books, writing paper etc and support the local women. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Nov 1, 2008 AKA the mummified monk. Thats what any tourist brochure will state. The monk isnt really mummified, he just hasnt decomposed. It is an eye opening experience. Personally i found it slightly creepy. ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 There are two burning ghats in Varanasi. Be respectful and do not take photos of burning bodies. It is considered highly offensive to do so. Varanasi is one of the best places to learn more about Hindu culture, and the burning ghats are a major part of this. ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 My memory of train travel was "chai, chai chai". People walking up and down selling tea. Indian train travel is an experience. It even makes Sydney's CityRail seem efficient! ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 One of the central ghats, easy to watch people, always something happening and close to markets. ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Loved it!! My family were most grossed out by the fact that the waterproof camera i had went for a dip in the ganges. Take a boat ride, walk along the bank, the ganges is one place you have to visit. Amazing photos, always something going on. ![]() Anne G. commented... Added Nov 1, 2008 Just keep writing, just keep writing, I`ll keep reading. :) ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I found this place fascinating. The history behind this beautiful place is amazing. You can hire a guide at the fort, well worth having a guided tour. ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Seeing that first glimpse of the Taj Mahal framed by the arches of the gate house, i was overcome with emotion. It is more beautiful than the photos you have seen. I had wanted to come here since i was eight years old and the place is magic. Take a wonder away from the crowds and find somewhere to sit and reflect. I did find it a bit lifeless, even though it is beautiful, it is still a tomb. I wasnt really expected for that. I also loved the pictures i bought for about 100 rupees, three pictures, developed on the day. Savour the experience, it is so very memorable. ![]() Dhaka, Dhaka Region, Bangladesh ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a zoo animal? If you are a white girl wearing a sari at Dhaka Zoo, you will be sure to find out! Be prepared for people to stare at you, follow you and practice their English on you. The zoo is a little disappointing by western standards. It has the usual range of animals but many are in small cages. The reason why I have rated this as four stars is that without people visiting, there will be less funds for animal care. ![]() Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 if i was visiting from overseas, i dont think this would be high on my to do list, i think botanical gardens in sydney are much better, and parramatta is about a half hour train trip from the city. they do have some interesting events on thru out the year but its not high on the to do list. ![]() Homebush, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 I was at a conference at the Novetel recently and i was really suprised at what was on offer at the olympic park. there is heaps of bike and running areas, swimming centre etc but also heaps of places to eat and grab a drink. Of course it is the site for Sydney's fantastic 2000 olympic games but i was pleasantly suprised by what else homebush had to offer. The Novetel is really nice too! ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 Great places for food and nightlife, it is currently being upgraded as well (Oct 2008). ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 You will get great views from the Manly ferry and also from the botanical gardens. You can pay for guided tours if you wish, or just see one of the many performances. I can recommend Bell Shakespeare Company. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 27, 2008 Groovy little place. I can recommend the cocktails and seafood pastas. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 27, 2008 It’s a little way out for Chaweng Beach but its worth it. The view is amazing and the house speciality is peri peri chicken. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 27, 2008 A complete lifesaver when i was desperate for coffee! Not too different from Starbucks back home. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 27, 2008 Amazing views of Koh Samui. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 27, 2008 Not really a backpackers place, more older people staying here but clean and comfortable and close to everything. Nice and cheap too! ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Questacon is AWESOME!! It really makes science fun. Great for kids and adult kids alike! ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Its the stuff of year six exhursions for every Aussie kid. Not alot to interest you if you arent into national buildings or politics. The best memory i have of Parliament house is when my sister, aged three at the time, fell off the chair and hit her head on the marble stair. Getting stitches at Parliament House is exciting tho! ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Always interesting and often some great exhibitions. ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Definitely hire a bike! This is where office workers from the surrounding buildings will come to eat there lunch, events such as the city to surf start from, etc. Great at dusk when they light the fairy lights on the big trees. ![]() Manly, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Northern end of Manly beach, gret views, swimming and you can walk Manly to Freshwater beach via queenscliff ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Manly Beach to Palm Beach...what more could you want! There are walking tours from the infomation system or you can just go exploring and find some great places for a drink. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 I agree with Deborah's review! Its a short stroll from Manly and its a great place for snorkling and diving. And of course swimming and sunbaking! ![]() Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Main Beach is the place to be in Byron. You can walk along and find a quiet place to relax. The water is warmer than Sydney as well! ![]() Manly, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 I don't think Manly has a shark problem! There is no problem swimming at Manly Beach. I would recommend swimming between the red and yellow flags because that is where the surf lifesaving patrols are, and esp for people from overseas who arent used to swimming at surf beaches. Bring a hat and sunscreen and relax at one of the best beaches in the world. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 You can find some pretty interesting stuff here- mainly jewellery, Aussie made items, food, etc. Its nice to walk around, browse the shops and have a beer in a rocks pub when your finished shopping! ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 I am biased because i live in Manly and i think it is the most wonderful place in the world. You should all come and visit!! There are heaps of backpackers places, B&B's, hotels etc so its worth staying here for at least a couple of days. Best way to get here is the Manly Ferry from circular quay. There is heaps to do- Beach, the Corso for shops and food, have a drink at the wharf bar, walk/bus up to north head, go round to Shelly beach, walk up to queenscliff, spit to manly walk, pizza at Hugos. And there is heaps more to do as well. Markets run most sundays, there is the Manly jazz festival, Manly food and wine festival. I told you it was the nicest place!! ![]() Watsons Bay, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Catching the ferry to Doyles is a great experience. Best ever. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 I was a cynic about bridge climb until i did it. Really worth it and amazing views. you cant take your own camera unfortunately, which does make it expensive when you buy the photos. If your on a budget, you get a pretty good view by climbing the pylons- less than ten dollars too! And for free you can walk across. ![]() Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 I love this zoo. I am aways trying to find an excuse to go- my younger cousin, overseas visitors etc. You need to spend the day here beacuse there is so much to see. For a slightly different approach, in the warmer months the zoo has a 'roar and snore' program where you camp out at the zoo and have a private night tour of the zoo, and get to spend the whole next day at the zoo. We fed the giraffes the next morning before anyone else was at the zoo. For more info, see the zoo website. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 Bondi Markets are some of the best in sydney. There is the school, opp the beach front on the northern end. If your here for city to surf- 14km run its awesome to watch all the runners hit the finish line here. Crowded but good. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 As a 'local' this is one of my fave places in sydney. Great views but i love just taking a picnic and chilling out. Theres a coffee shop in the middle and if you are staying nearby, this is an awesome spot to go for a run. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 The best and most cost effective way to explore the harbour is on a ferry day tripper pass. It cost $16.50 AUD and you get a day to use all the ferries. You can go to Watsons Bay for fish and chips at doyles, across to Luna Park and Darling Harbour and of course, the best way to see the harbour is to take the 30min ride to Manly. Going out you get to see the the heads of the harbour and heading back in to circular quay is the most awesome view of the opera house and the bridge. And theres heaps of other places you can go by ferry, just a case of exploring and having your own adventure. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Good medical attention, esp for hiking injuries! I went here when i injured my knee in Nepal and they were good, and i was able to get an appointment easily. Close to Thamel, and you can hire crutches!! ![]() Namche Bazar, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 We trekked back from Everest Base Camp via Tengboche Monastery. It was a relieve to stop walking and it offers some amazing views of Mt Everest. My favorite picture of this hike was taken here, outside the monastery with Everest in the background. My guide and I hugged and the picture was taken. For me this picture represents the hardships of the hike and the optimism of going home to see my family. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Trekking to Everest Base Camp was one of the most challenging things I have ever done, both physically and mentally. It was tough. There were moments when I cried. Moments when without the encouragement of my guides and other group members I would have wanted to have given up. Moments when I was just overwhelmed by the beauty of my surroundings. I did the trek with Intrepid, 15 days and I would recommend them. The benefit of doing it with a group is that you make friends and you all encourage each other. I did it tougher than most, eight weeks prior i was in hospital with pneumonia. But i made it and i learnt alot about myself and what strength of character i have. If you ever have the opportunity to do this trek, it is worth it. It is amazing just to have set eyes on the world's highest mountain. Eric M. commented... Added Nov 19, 2008 Holy moly you`re one tough cookie! Hey Melanie - this is my favorite review of yours :) I haven't been anywhere near Nepal, but I've been at that point when you're climbing and you feel like you've got nothing left and you just want to curl up in a warm bed, but somehow you convince yourself to go on, and end up feeling absolutely incredible when you finally make it. Thanks for sharing! ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 This place was amazing to come back to after 15 days of trekking to Everest Base Camp. One of the best hot showers ever. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the best thing about KGH is that it is close to everything. It really is in the heart of Thamel. They also run things like movie nights, so you can even just chill with your friends here. If your treking and are booked to come back here, you can leave your extra stuff here as well. I would definately stay here again. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Great pool, great rooms, great room service, breakfast is amazing. Best to stay on the beach side if you can. Pool was awesome. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Fantastic location- next to shops and transport. The hotel is gorgeous. I cant believe they actually moved it from one side of town to another. ![]() Hyden, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 If you go, get a picture of yourself yawning. Makes it all more memorable. Close to wave rock so combine the two trips. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 For ten dollars you can climb it. Otherwise tick it off your Perth 'done' list and take a photo. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 This was a magical place just to sit and relax. You are right in the city but you wouldnt know it! You can get pictures of the black swans- unique to WA. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Relaxing place for a few drinks right on the river. And who knows...you might get lucky! ![]() Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Awesome beer, awesome beer, awesome beer. Barstaff were great, gave us tastings of all the beer Fantastic atmosphere. Completely recommended! ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Awesome views of the city. I went because my 84 year old Nan said to. So i did. You can get free buses from the centre of the city near London Court. Ask at info centre about it. ![]() Cervantes, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Pretty amazing stuff. The landscape was like nothing i've ever seen. Again, its about 2-3 hours from Perth so its a long drive but incredible when you get there. You can drive around some of the pinnacles but i recommend walking- better views! It is hot, so bring a hat and sun lotion. ![]() Hyden, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Its about three hours from Perth and apart from Hippo's Yawn its a long way from anything. Once we had our pics we got bored easily but amused ourselves by taking self timed pictures...the result was a fractured fifth metatarsal ie foot bone so my recommendation is not to jump off anything! You can climb above the rock for pretty amazing views. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 I took my English girls here and we had so much fun! Cute shopping area filled with character. ![]() Busselton, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 I agree. Glass of wine plus sunset equals amazing photos. And great memories ![]() Augusta, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 worth going for the view but mainly cos you can get a picture of yourself with the sign to both the Indian and Southern ocean! ![]() Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 18, 2008 You really only want to be here for a few hours and you get high from just walking down the street. Heaps of parking behind the main street and you cant go more than 50m from your car without getting offered hash. Its about 40mins from Byron on a really windy road. You can get some very interesting hash themed souveniours and it’s the only place I know that sells marajana incense. Make sure you spot the Big Joint in Australia’s series of big things (ie big banana, big pinapple etc). As you drive in from Byron, it’s the white rolled thing hanging of the pub sign on the left hand side. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 Awesome food in an awesome setting. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 An interesting experience but i thought it was overpriced shopping for thailand. Khoa San Road is much better value and the stall keepers are less pushy. ![]() Kanchanaburi, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 A moving museum that you can visit as part of a bigger day trip from Bangkok ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 Seven levels of market style shopping. Level 7 has some great places for a Thai massage, pedicure and manicures. Levels 1-3 tend to be fashion and shoes, electronics and fake DVDs tend to be levels 5-7. Level 7 has heaps of pashmina shops. Maccas is on level 1!!! Some shops are bargaining shops, others tend to be “fixed price”. If no sign then BARGIN!!!!!! ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 Koh Samui has everything- temples, shopping, beach, bars, kyaks, elephants, fab food, thai boxing, thai cooking course. Perfect place to relax and its not as busy as phuket. ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 This is the place to be in Koh Samui. Spend the day chilling by the beach with a cocktail or two...water sports if you are feeling energetic and heaps of fantastic places to grab a pad thai for lunch. At night there are heaps of fab places to eat and have a drink. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 make sure you wear long pants or skirt and a shirt with sleeves...otherwise you can borrow clothes for a 100 TB deposit. it does get very hot, esp in the middle of the day ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 The best way to see the temple is by river. You can buy a tourist pass for hop on- hop off boat for 300 TB. Combine this temple with the palace for great day of sight seeing. ![]() Thailand ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 This is my fave place to eat in the entire world. We ate here 5 times in 12 days. LOVED IT!!! Going back to Koh Samui mainly due to Prego. ![]() Ko Tao, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 I loved Koh Tao. It was a fantastic place to snorkle. The hour ferry ride from Koh Samui made me feel sea sick but it was worth it. You can organise guided snorkling tours from Koh Samui. One tip is to bring some bread with you- fish will eat out of your hands! ![]() Kanchanaburi, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 I was moved by visiting the cemetery and was privileged to be able to pay my respects to those who died. Lest we forget. ![]() Thailand ![]() Added Oct 16, 2008 This is one place i would love to go back to. We had a fantastic evening ![]() Namche Bazar, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 15, 2008 At 3880m above sea level, the Everest View Hotel is the highest hotel in the world. Trekking into Namche Bazar is not something I found easy, nor was the acclimatisation day we spent in Namche. There are two fantastic view points of Everest. One is at the Everest View Hotel, the other is up the small hill from the conservation memorial entrance gate in the national park. Unfortunately we didnt get to see Everest from either point due to weather but the hike was fantastic and it was snowing on our group. I would definately recommend a guide- not something you just decide to do by yourself. Our guide was with Intrepid and he was fantastic. And i think it must be said it is an achievement to just make it up here. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 15, 2008 The reason this place rocks is you get to draw on a foot and it goes up on the wall...it makes for a very entertaining evening with good food as well. Go and try to spot my feet... (and it you climb to the top of Everest you get a free meal) ![]() Nepal ![]() Added Oct 15, 2008 Chitwan NP was one of my fave places in Nepal. It has everything- rhino trekking, elephant washing, canoeing with crocodiles. I did Chitwan as part of my Intrepid trip (Delhi to Kathmandu) and it was brilliant. We spent a total of three days and it was the perfect place to chill out with my friends and sip a cold Everest Beer. They also have a nearby elephant conservation centre. The two biggest highlights were- 1. Being 50m away from wild rhinos 2. Elephant washing- riding an elephant bareback while it washes itself (and you!) ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 13, 2008 The Witch's Hat was a funky backpackers place, about 15 mins from central Perth (ie the malls). Its close to Northbridge shops and its clean with friendly staff. It looks amazing from the outside too! ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 Rottnest Island is 30mins ferry from Freemantle, bit longer from Perth and an awesome place to spend a day. If you are energetic you can hire a bike and ride around the island. Or there is the bus option where you can hop or and off for $10 AUD. Theres a few food options on the island from fast food to restraunts and pubs, gorgeous beaches and quokkas. You can join free walking tour to spot quokkas at 1pm. Just don't feed them- its bad for them and can land you a $50 fine! Perfect place for a day out and you can land back in Freo and head for a beer at Little Creatures. ![]() Dhaka, Dhaka Region, Bangladesh ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 Dhaka is NOT the place to get your nose pierced. I found that out the hard way. What possessed me to even consider getting a piercing in a third world country? I am still being asked that. My friend Eliza and myself were driven by our driver to a Dhaka beauty salon. That in itself was an interesting experience. Our accompanying males had to wait outside. on the inside, the women were friendly and very interested in us. English was limited to non verbal "Ouch Ouch??" questioning before undergoing the piercing gun. Eliza went first. She reassured me it didn't hurt that much. I later found out it did. With a stud being shot thru my nose I had the most awesome head wobble on video. There was an interested audience of women interested in us while the salon manager when outside to our accompanying males to give them a prescription for pain killers and to explain to them our post piercing care. We naturally did not get told this! A great experience for 400 taka. Unfortunately 5 days later infection set in. The nose stud was removed, despite about 100 kids from the orphanage I was visiting in trying to fix it for me. Lesson Learnt: No piercings in Dhaka. Visit the salon for a manicure next time.
